Here’s a fun fact! Over 4 million Americans receive Botox™ injection(s) a year, per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
It’s no secret that Botox™ is arguably the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment, with many reaping the wide variety of benefits it offers.
However, if you’re new to Botox™, that’s okay! We’re here to help.
This article will give you a quick run-down on Botox™ as well as explain what you can expect at your appointment.
Botox Basics
Botox Cosmetic™ is an FDA-approved injectable made up of botulinum toxin. The injections temporarily relax muscles, specifically in areas of the face.
Botox™ is used for a wide array of concerns, both cosmetic and medical.
Cosmetic:
- Softening lip lines
- Smoothing forehead lines
- Reducing the appearance of crow’s feet (lines around the eyes)
- Target and treat frown lines between the eyebrows (also known as “11” lines)
- Lifting the brows for more of an arch
Medical:
- Treating and preventing chronic migraines
- Treating hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
- Treating muscle spasms
- Treating chronic eyelid twitching
- Managing urinary incontinence
No matter your reasoning for seeking Botox™, your provider will start with a consultation appointment
Botox™ Consultation
Consultations function to give your provider a better understanding of your treatment goals; this will also help them dictate decisions like where they will apply treatment and how many units they will use in the desired areas.
A consultation is also the perfect time to ask any questions you have (remember, all questions are welcome!).During this appointment, your provider will ask for details regarding your medical history and share any important safety information relevant to the procedure.
After getting all of the necessary medical details, your provider will work with you to create a treatment plan specific to you and your needs.
The Injection Process
Let’s talk injections!
The good thing about Botox™ treatments is that the injection process is quick, easy, and relatively painless.
Here’s what you can expect:
- The injection site will be cleaned and sanitized. Make sure to arrive at your appointment makeup-free to help speed up this process!
- Your injector may mark the injection areas with a pen and take “before” photos so that you can see your progress.
- Your provider will then inject a specific amount of botulinum toxin.
It’s more common to see the results gradually in the days to come.
